Review of WandaVision’s Matt Shakman to Direct the Next Star Trek Film

After directing Marvel and Disney+’s hit series WandaVision, which received 23 Emmy nominations on Tuesday, Deadline brings word that Matt Shakman will direct the next Star Trek film for Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot.

Shakman will be directing from a script written by Lindsey Beer (Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, Pet Sematary, The Kingkiller Chronicle) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Raider, Captain Marvel, Silver Sable), marking the project as the first time ever a Star Trek movie has been written by female screenwriters.

The untitled film will reportedly begin production next spring with a release date currently set for June 9, 2023 (via THR). Abrams will produce.

Besides this year’s nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for WandaVision, Shakman received his first Emmy nomination in 2020 for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for the Elle Fanning-led Hulu series The Great. Shakman’s credits also include Succession, The Boys, Billions, Game of Thrones, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, You’re the Worst, and The Good Wife.
