When the Marvel Cinematic Universe was just in its infancy, Marvel Studios was notorious for inking talent to large, multiple film deals that would keep them with the company for years. According to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, those days are behind the company.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Feige noted that deals like that are varying now and that the studio isn’t exactly interested in looking to lock down everyone for major commitments: “That got a lot of attention way back when, with I think Scarlett [Johansson], and [Chris] Hemsworth and [Chris] Evans and Sam Jackson. It varies now.”

“It varies, project to project, cast to cast,” Feige continued. “Really, what we want are people that come in, are excited to be in the universe, are excited at the opportunity to do more things, as opposed to being locked into contractual obligations.”

In the past, Marvel had done business with major stars in their franchise by inking them to long-running deals. Samuel L. Jackson famously signed on for a nine-picture deal in 2009, and the likes of Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, and Chris Hemsworth have also signed six-picture deals in the past. However, it looks like Feige is looking on to the future of things now, and with the Marvel Cinematic Universe as popular as it is, locking down talent for future films is likely much less troublesome than it used to be.
