Review of Spiral Helps Saw Franchise Top $1 Billion In Worldwide Box Office

The Saw franchise hit a major milestone this weekend that put the Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures horror franchise in elite company. Spiral, which stars Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson, was once again the No. 1 film in North America. The success of the latest entry also brought the Saw franchise past the $1 billion mark.

Lionsgate reports that the estimated cume is now at $1,000,799,533. Spiral is the sixth film in the popular franchise to take the top spot in North America. It brought in $4.55 million from 2,991 theaters, which raises its total to an estimated $15.827 million in the region.

Internationally, Spiral grossed an estimated $2.67 million this weekend from 21 international territories. That raises the international total to an estimated $6.72 million. It’s set to open at No. 3 this weekend in the United Kingdom with $1.15 million in its first week.

“We congratulate our friends at Twisted Pictures and all of the filmmakers and stars who have been a part of the Saw legacy,” said David Spitz, Lionsgate’s President of domestic theatrical distribution. “Over the years, our partners have been innovative, creative, and open to new ideas as they have nurtured a microbudget film into a billion-dollar-plus-grossing cultural phenomenon.”

Spiral is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and written by Josh Stolberg & Peter Goldfinger. The producers are Oren Koules and Mark Burg. The reboot was pitched by Chris Rock, a fan of the franchise, to the producing team. Bousman previously directed Saw IIIII, and IV. It stars Rock, Jackson, Max Minghella, and Marisol Nichols.
