Review of Malcolm Spellman: ‘Marvel Won’t Tell Me What Happened to Steve Rogers’

Although there’s a new Captain America behind the shield, fans are still wondering if Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers will ever return to the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to The Falcon and The Winter Soldier creator Malcolm Spellman, even he doesn’t know what the future holds for Rogers.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier talks about Steve Rogers often but never really goes into too much detail on what happened to him following his Avengers: Endgame decision to remain in the past with his love. In a new interview with Inverse, Spellman said that even he isn’t exactly sure about what has happened with Rogers because Marvel won’t tell him.

“I’ve got to tell you the truth, my friend,” Spellman said. “Marvel won’t tell me what happened to Steve, so we were able to write whatever we wanted because we don’t know. We’re wondering if Steve’s on the moon too, you know what I’m saying? That’s as good a guess as anything because they won’t tell me.” At the moment, it seems as if Marvel is content with keeping the mystery surrounding Rogers close to its chest, although reports have surfaced that Chris Evans could be in talks to return as the character at some point.

Spellman also briefly touched on the closing title to the Disney+ show, which ends with a Captain America and The Winter Soldier title card. When asked if he ever thought about changing the title for Bucky as well, Spellman revealed that it was more of a decision on Marvel’s part.

“I’ll be honest: I discovered that title change when I was watching a cut of the episode, and it wrecked me,” Spellman explained. “I haven’t spoken to Marvel about whether they considered changing Bucky’s name too, but my gut tells me the reason it still says “and the Winter Soldier” is simply because they wanted to play with the poetry of a title you’ve been hearing. If they had changed too much, it maybe wouldn’t have felt the same, but I truly don’t know what discussion went into it. I just know it landed heavy with me.”
