Per IndieWire, United Artists has given acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson’s yet-to-be-titled ninth feature film a limited release on November 26, allowing the pic to compete in the 2021-2022 Oscar season. A nationwide expansion will follow on December 25.

Not much is known about Anderson’s latest venture other than he shot a majority of it in Los Angeles under the faux title “Soggy Bottom,” and that it likely takes place in the 1970s in the San Fernando Valley, or the setting of the director’s breakout film Boogie Nights. Rumors suggest the film details the relationship between a high school student child actor, played by Cooper Hoffman (son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, a frequent Anderson collaborator) and a famous Hollywood producer, played by Bradley Cooper. Benny Safdie co-stars and is reportedly playing a politician running for office.

Anderson’s film joins a solid UAR fall lineup that includes the long-delayed James Bond flick No Time to Die as well as Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci, starring Adam Driver and Lady Gaga.

After his well-received directorial debut Hard Eight, Anderson brought his stories back to his homeland with 1997’s historical drama surrounding the porn industry Boogie Nights, 1999’s LA-set epic Magnolia and 2002’s romantic black comedy Punch-Drunk Love starring Adam Sandler in a rare dramatic role. The films featured communities across the San Fernando Valley, including Sherman Oaks, Encino and Tarzana.

His previous film, Phantom Thread, was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and walked away with a statue for Best Costume Design.
